leadershape
Do I really want to give up part of my winter break to attend a leadership camp? I went back and forth on this question for weeks before I finally decided that I should just go for it. I can honestly say that this was one of the best decisions I have ever made. LeaderShape opened my eyes to how I have led in the past and how I can work to make myself the most effective leader that I can be. We spent time analyzing each of our personal leadership methods and how to work well with other personality types. One of the most beneficial parts of LeaderShape for me was the time that we broke up into small groups and talked about diversity and how we as a society need to work to overcome stereotypes because we are all unique and that is what makes our world so special.
Coming into LeaderShape I had a lot of leadership experience, and to me leadership was working in an elected position to make sure things ran smoothly. My definition of leadership definitely changed as a result of LeaderShape. I now see leadership as a much deeper and meaningful skill. Leadership is someone who works with integrity to improve the lives of those who they are leading.
** The picture above is one of my all-time favorite pictures because the picture itself brings back so many amazing memories of a week spent with the most incredible people, people who I promise you, will change the world someday.
At LeaderShape, every attendee was required to identify a problem within the city of Cincinnati, a solution to said problem, and an action plan to get there. My action plan focused on homelessness in Cincinnati. The epidemic is often over looked by members of the city and the city council because we grow up watching our elders snub their noses at those begging on the street corner. Has anyone thought about how they got there or stopped to listen to their story? What about all of the children? The children, abandoned by their parents, who are forced to live on the streets, as their only alternative? The first step to my action plan is to make this problem more widely-known and to build a strong and caring force around these people. After I got home from LeaderShape, I researched this problem in the city and found several (mildly outdated) reports on this epidemic, but I haven’t seen much action off of those reports. So attached you will find the city of Cincinnati’s “Strategies to End Homelessness” and also a copy of my action plan.I am passionate and committed to this project and as I get older, I will continue to work on a better tomorrow – starting with the city of Cincinnati and those who need us most.
