In order to expand my professionalism, consulting experience, and understanding of all types of business, I signed up to consult a local company in their eighth year of business (because of a confidentiality agreement I had to sign, I am not able to disclose the company's name, and will refer to them thereafter as XYZ Company).
Although this experience came at the end of my undergraduate journey, it has proved to be one of the most beneficial, academically speaking. Working with XYZ Company has given me further insight into how the business world operates, and quite frankly, what works and what doesn't work.
My consulting group, comprised of four other students and myself, had our initial meeting with our client and learned very quickly that their company lacked strategic planning and structure. Our client has incredible employees and leadership, but without key components such as a business plan, market research, or even an accounting department, the company will not grow.
Through this experience, I have learned how to deliver constructive criticism to a boss and how to construct business plans, market research, and grow a company from the inside. I have also learned valuable lessons on working with a work team and delegating roles and deliverables.
I have recorded over 75 hours of meeting with the client, working with my team, writing reports, and researching, and still have another 75 hours until completion. We will be delivering our final presentation to our client during the final week of the semester.
